How to Design a Jewelers Bench Room

Whether you design jewelry as a hobby, or you have a home-based business, you might want to turn your spare room or garage into a space designated to making your jewelery. The specific design of your space will depend on your personal needs and the types of jewelry that you create. You can easily design a space to accomodate your needs.

Things You Will Need:

  • Paper

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

  • Tape measure

  1. Think about what you need from your jewelers bench room. This will vary greatly based on the types of jewelry that you create. Make a detailed list of all of the steps in your jewelry making process. Include such things as stringing beads, drilling, polishing and sawing.

  2. Make a second list of all of the equipment that you need for each step in your jewelry making process. Your space will have to be designed in a way that accommodates all of the equipment that you need, so it is important to have a thorough list before beginning your room design. List all of the materials and supplies that you use when creating your jewelry, as you will want to have these materials on hand and stored within your bench room.

  3. Measure your room. Measure the length and width of your jewelers bench room. This will let you know the exact amount of space that you have to work with as you plan your design. Write a scale on your paper that equates one inch to one foot of length. If your room is 8 feet x 10 feet, sketch a drawing of your room to scale. Your drawing will be 8 inches x 10 inches.

  4. Add details to your room sketch. Mark the location of doors, windows and closets. Place an "X" to mark the location of power outlets within the room, as this is a consideration in designing a bench room.

  5. Sketch your bench, work area, storage cabinets and other supplies or equipment that you need. You will likely need to do a few different designs and sketches in order to come up with a floor plan that you are happy with. Be sure to leave space for sitting, standing and moving about the room.

  6. Choose your materials. Be sure to select materials and supplies that are easy to clean, as jewelry making is a messy process. Add any ventilation or sound-proofing supplies that are necessary for your space. Design the space so as to provide adequate lighting for your workspace. In addition to overhead lighting, you will likely want to install portable task lighting to help you see the details of your work.
