How to Cut Glass Mirrors
Cutting a glass mirror is pretty simple with the right tools and can be done rather quickly. There is a wide variety of styles and sizes that can be made from various items around the home. Once completed, there is a sense of pride in it that makes the process worth while.
Things to have on hand:
- Sheet of glass mirror
- Straight edge
- Tape measure
- Glass cutter
- Leather gloves
- Dry erase pen
1. Place the mirror on a flat surface like a table, counter top or workbench.
2. Measure the exact size that you need to cut using the tape measure.
3. Place a dot on the mirror with the dry erase pen where you will need to make the cut.
4. Place the straight edge along side of the dot you made with the dry erase pen.
5. Trace a straight line with the dry erase pen along the straight edge on the glass.
6. Hold the straight edge in place securely with one hand.
7. Use the glasscutter in the other hand, usually the hand that you write with.
8. Push the cutting wheel to the mirror.
9. Apply even pressure as you cut along the line that you made with the dry erase pen.
10. Keep the glasscutter steady in your hand while cutting. This will create a small fracture in the mirror.
11. Place the mirror over the edge of the flat surface. The part that you drew the line on will be hanging over.
12. Hold it in place.
13. Tap along the entire line that you drew to separate the glass into two pieces.
