How to Create an Internet Music Server

An Internet Music Server application will transform your home computer into a web server that hosts music for your visitors.  You can also use another computer or mobile device.  However, you’ll still need a Windows computer with an Internet connection for this to work.

  1. Download and install a program called Jinzora.  This is a free, open-source application that will turn your home computer into a streaming media server.  Keep in mind that music is copyrighted and you don’t want to violate this copyright as there are legal implications to doing so.  Therefore, you don’t want to share your music with others but this is a great way for you to be able to access your music from anywhere and from a lot of different types of devices.  For instance, you can access it via other computers, game consoles, mobile phones and more.

  2. Once you have Jinzora installed you will need to browse to the Sockso website so that you can download the Sockso Personal Music Server software.  Another free, open-source option will help you to stream your music anywhere.  It will also allow you to share your server with your friends (be careful though).

  3. Sign up for a Dropbox account and install the free desktop software that will allow you to create a folder on your computer that will always be synced with the Internet.  This is great for whenever you have a friend download a new song onto your computer.  By placing it in your Dropbox folder, you will instantly be able to access it regardless of where you are.
