How to Create Cross Ventilation in a Home
Cross ventilation happens when cool air enters a building and forces the warm air out a door or window. Cross ventilation is important to create in your home because it brings in more oxygen and can create a cooler atmosphere.
- Work with a builder to determine the direction the wind blows during different times throughout the day and year. Work with your builder by placing windows in certain locations to create positive pressure that allow air to circulate throughout your home.
- Maximize airflow. If you plan to renovate your house, align windows and doors opposite of one another.
- Use ridge vents in your home to create ventilation. two types of vents you can use are filter vents or shingle-over vents. The wind blows from outside over your vent to create air pressure, removing humidity and heat.
- Use and install wind turbines. Wind turbines use the wind to create airflow to ventilate air pressure. Try to purchase a 14-inch wind turbine. Wind turbines provide your home with 30 percent more air.
- Open all of your windows on the opposite sides of your home to create a breeze to cross ventilate your home. In addition, turn on your ceiling fan, if you have one. Open your doors in all of your rooms to allow the air to circulate through your home. This creates the cross ventilation effect in your home. It is best to check the weather to see how windy it is on the day you want to do this.
