How to Cover Chinese Takeout Containers

Chinese take out containers can be covered with fabric and used as decorative, inexpensive storage containers. Add beads, ribbons or other accessories to make them even more unique. These can even be carried as a purse. No matter what you choose to use it for, covering the container can be a fun and inexpensive craft project for children.

Materials Needed:

  • Chinese takeout container

  • 1/2 yard of fabric

  • Spray adhesive

  • Scissors

  • Craft glue

  • Velcro

  • Chalk for fabric

  • Iron

  1. Remove the wire handle from the container.

  2. Take the container and unfold it. Then lay it on the table, flattened.

  3. Lay out the piece of fabric on the table.

  4. Use your iron to smooth out any wrinkles in the fabric.

  5. Place the flattened container on the fabric.

  6. Use your chalk to trace around the edges of the container. Make the outline 1/2 inch bigger than the container, on each side.

  7. Take your scissors and cut out the outline from the fabric.

  8. Spray adhesive on the outside of the container, making sure to get all sides.

  9. Place the flattened container onto the fabric's backside. Starting from the middle, smooth out all the wrinkles. Reposition the container before the adhesive dries, if needed.

  10. Glue the edges of the fabric; the 1/2 inch extra cut on each side, to the inside of the container.

  11. Cut the corners at a 45-degree angle, which will may them lay flat.

  12. Glue the fabric down over the lid.

  13. Take the scissors and poke holes through the fabric for the handles.

  14. Glue the fabric down around the holes.

  15. Fold the container.

  16. Replace the wire handle into the container.

  17. Glue Velcro to the lid so that it will close.
