How to Compare Residential HVAC Systems
It can be somewhat tricky to compare residential HVAC systems because there is no way to know how a system is going to perform until after you purchase it and have it installed within your home. There are also some things that will heavily influence the type of system you can purchase. However, there are some things to be on the lookout for.
- Get a price quote from three HVAC contractors in your area. They can be found online, in your local phone book or from personal recommendations.
- Make sure that you only deal with NATE (North American Technician Excellence organization) certified technicians who have solid customer ratings, which can be found at the Better Business Bureau.
- Try to find a contractor who has been in business for a long time, offers a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee and various accreditations. These things will put you at ease.
- Create a comparison chart that lists each of the contractors and the topics that you are comparing, such as efficiency, features, functions and warranties.
- Compare each system’s energy efficiency ratings. This information can be found on the manufacturer’s website or by contracting a local HVAC contractor. The higher the number means higher energy efficiency and lower operating costs.
- Compare the various features and functions. Look for single-stage or two-stage operation, as this will provide higher efficiency, greater temperature consistency and quieter operation. Take into consideration whether there are any other additional functions included (i.e. enhanced humidity control, electronic air cleaning, fresh air ventilation).
- Compare warranties. Most manufacturers cover the entire system, including parts and labor for a set number of years while others limit the warranty or the parts that are covered by the warranty.
