How to Clean Suede Furnishings

Cleaning suede furnishings requires you to only use certain products because water will damage the material and allow permanent watermarks to form on the fabric. You can follow a few steps that will help you to successfully clean your suede furnishings.

Items Needed:

  • Suede cleaner

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Toothbrush or alike

  1. Avoid using any type of cleaner that must be mixed with water. This type of cleaner can damage the material and leave it unable to clean.

  2. Determine the type of substances that are stuck on your suede fabric. Suede tends to attract oils that require a special cleaning solution.

  3. Look for a cleaner that is designed for suede. These cleaners work to remove the build up without damaging the fabric.

  4. Apply the cleaner only to the areas that need it. Spot cleaning is highly recommended when cleaning suede furnishings.

  5. Allow the cleaner to dry before applying another application. Allowing it to dry between applications will prevent the fabric from soaking up too much of the material and creating a water stain from the small amount of water that all cleaners are made with.

  6. Use rubbing alcohol on the areas that did not come clean. This will smell strong for a few days, but will take the stain out quickly from the fabric.

  7. Allow all areas to dry and run the fabric with a toothbrush or wide brush device. Suede tends to get very hard when it is cleaner, so rubbing the fabric with the brush will help it to loosen back up.
