How to Choose a Hair School

Choosing a cosmetology school is very important when deciding to become a hairdresser. Things like the schools reputation, accreditation and course flexibility all play an important part in your decision to attend.  Having a good repore with your instructors is essential as well.

  • Select a school with accreditation. Research the school that you plan to attend and make sure that they have the proper accreditation by the state board of cosmetology.

  • Choose a school that is in close proximity to your residence. Attending cosmetology school is a year long commitment, or two years if you attend part-time. The course follows a strict attendance policy and if you miss more than the allotted time given then you will prolong your graduation date. For this reason, you want to make sure that you choose a school that is close enough for you to be able to get back and forth daily with no problem.

  • Consider tuition costs. The average cost of tuition ranges between $6,500 and $10,000 depending on your geographical location. Although you want to find the most affordable program, cheaper is not always better. The school that costs less may have other hidden fees that add up like paying for individual books and supplies. Make sure that you find out all costs involved before registering to attend.

  • Visit the school you plan to attend. Call and ask to speak with the manager. Make an appointment to arrange a tour of the school so you can get an up close look at the facility. Jot down a list of questions to ask in advance. Speak with the instructors and find out how long they have been teaching. Inquire if there are full-time and part-time classes available.
