How to Choose Gymnastic Floor Routine Music

Gymnastics competitions include many different events. One of the most exciting and creative events is the floor routine. The floor routine allows gymnasts to exercise a bit of creativity. In most cases, a gymnast can choose her own music for her gymnastic floor routine.

  1. Learn about the rules that you must follow. Most competitions will limit the length of floor routine music. Others will restrict gymnasts to choosing from a certain type of music. Still other competitions will actually provide the gymnasts with a predetermined list of music from which to select their song.

  2. Time your routine. Perform the entire routine from beginning to end. Ask your coach or a fellow gymnast to run a stop watch as you perform the routine. This will give you an idea as to how long your musical selection will need to be.

  3. Decide on your pace. The pace of your routine will be determined mostly by your skill level. Highly-skilled gymnasts often have strong, fast-paced floor routines. Match the pace of your routine to the pace of your music choices.

  4. Choose a few different songs to try out. Select music from varying genres. All of the music should be similar in tone and pace. Perform your routine to each song. Ask a friend to watch your routine and provide feedback regarding which song best suits the movement and feeling of your routine. Take your own feelings into account, as well. The song that you choose should be inspiring and make you feel energetic and ready to perform.

  5. Select your song. After trying out a few different possibilities, make your final song selection.
