How to Choose Automotive Tires

If you aren’t familiar with the terms and abbreviations used for tires sizing, you may not know what size tires are the best for your vehicle. Tires for SUV and trucks are larger than tires for cars. If you travel a lot, you will need different tires than if you are casual driver and only go driving a short distance.

  1. Inspect the tire for size information. Most tires have the sizing information near the rim of the tire. Write down this size, so you can remember what to ask for when you go or call around to tire shops.

  2. Calculate your usage of your car. If you drive a lot, you want tires that are designed for high mileage and have a longer life. Cheaper tires are usually made for casual driving and will wear out faster if you are a high-mileage driver. It will be cheaper in the long run to buy high-mileage tires if you use your vehicle heavily.

  3. Consider the weather in your area. If you have a lot of rain and snow in your region, you need tires with good traction. Traction adds to the expense of the tire, but it helps to have it when you are in such weather.

  4. Choose a tire that compliments your driving style. Use the UTQG rating to choose your speed range. Keep in mind the higher speed rating softer the rubber is, and the shorter it’s life span. For example, a Q rating will handle speeds best up to 99 MPH, while a V rated tire can handle up to 149MPH. Most people never get up this type of speed usually they are professional race car drivers.
