How to Check the Status of a State Tax Refund

Once you have filed your state tax return and know what you are getting as a refund, the time is takes to process seems like ages. Instead of waiting for weeks, without knowing how long it is supposed to take, there is a way that you can go about checking the status of your refund after you have filed your taxes.


  1. Locate the official website for your state’s Department of Revenue. In order to do this, simply navigate to a search engine and type in the name of your state and “Department of Revenue”.

  2. Find the option to click that says either Where’s My Refund or Check Refund Status. Click on this option to go to the next page. You will need to enter your personal information, in order to get a status update. The site will ask you to enter your social security number and the amount of your state income tax refund. Some websites in various states will require you to enter your full name, as well as your filing status. Click on the Submit button, once you have entered all of the required information.

  3. Call the number that is listed on the Department of Revenue’s website, if your specific state does not have the option to check the status online. These states either offer you the option to speak with someone verbally or to go through the automated prompts and enter your information electronically to obtain status information.

  4. Follow the prompts as required, entering the requested information, and wait for a status update on your state income tax refund.
