How to Check for Software Updates on a Mac Book Pro

When Apple releases software updates; it is important to get the update for the health of your Mac Book Pro. You will need to do this often to keep your system running smoothly. Completing the updates will help protect your computer from threats and it keeps the Mac Book from lagging. Learn how to properly install the updates for your specific Mac.

MAC OS X 10.5 and later



  1. Go the Apple menu and locate the “apple” icon.

  2. Click on the icon and a drop-down menu will appear. Choose “Software Update.”

  3. Watch for the “Software Update” window to appear. Click on the updates that you wish to install.

  4. Enter your account name and the password. Allow the updates to install completely. When prompted, restart your computer. The update will complete as the computer reboots.


MAC OS X 10.3 and earlier.



  1. Click on the Apple icon. Choose “System Preferences.” Allow the menu to pop-up.

  2. Choose “Software Updates.” A new window will appear with the available updates. Choose the updates you wish to install.

  3. Click “Install.” Enter your account name and password. Allow the updates to continue installing.

  4. Restart the computer, when prompted, to complete the update process.

  5. Repeat this process each time updates are available to ensure your computer is up-to-date.
