How to Build a Cheap Compost Bin for Yard Waste

Compost bins are used to collect material found in the yard. The material is then spread in a garden bed and used to grow different types of plants. You can build a cheap compost bin from a few different materials found around your home.

Items Needed:

• Shady yard area


• Small wire fencing


• Garden hoe


• Plastic tarp

1. Decide on a shady area to place the compost bin. The size of the area decides on the maximum size of the compost bin you’ll build.


2. Take the small wire fencing and place it on the ground in a circular and square shape.


3. Use a small garden hoe to dig down about 2 inches into the soil where the compost fencing will be placed.


4. Place the fencing into the ground. Be sure the fencing is snug so it doesn’t become loose and ruin the compost bin.


5. Enclose the fencing on all sizes of the wire fencing.


6. Cut a piece of tarp and place it around the metal fencing. This will prevent any animals from intruding or compost from escaping the area.


7. Fill the area with items from the yard such as leaves. Be sure to wet the items before they are placed in the compost bin.


8. Cover the top of the bin with a piece of tarp. This will keep the area enclosed and the moisture inside of the bin.


9. Turn the compost and add new items on a regular basis to keep the compost fresh for the garden.
