How to Become an Independent Paralegal

An independent paralegal works as an independent contractor for the courts and lawyers in or near the area where she lives. Becoming an independent paralegal allows you to have more control over your career. Become an independent paralegal by getting an education in the field.

  1. Locate a school online or in your community that offers training as a paralegal. Find out if the school is approved by the American Bar Association by asking your admission representative. Check the ABA Web page to find a list of approved schools.

  2. Apply for admissions and financial aid at the chosen school to start the process of becoming an independent paralegal. Enroll in courses when your admissions counselor tells you to. Complete your paralegal training in order to start your career as an independent paralegal.

  3. Start the process of getting certified with your state by searching online for "paralegal certification" and your state. Make sure that you have fulfilled the education requirements needed to become certified, such as obtaining a ABA-approved degree, and that you are a legal resident of the United States.

  4. Sign up by completing the forms needed to take the examination. The Web page where you found out about your state's paralegal certification may have the forms. Complete and mail the forms back in before the deadline with your fee. Study for the examination by reviewing materials you learned in your introductory course including terms.  Take the test at the required date and time.

  5. Find out from the newspaper company how much it cost to let your ad run a month. Sit down and write down what you want your ad to say. Make sure that it includes your rates and business information.

  6. Visit a printing company to have business cards done. Place your services and contact information on the cards. Ask business owners if you can staple a business card on their advertising board to get your name out there. Give the business owner a handful of business cards that he can place on the desk to allow customers to pick one up when they come into the store.
