How to Become a Registered Massage Therapist

A massage therapy is a field that is gaining in popularity. With the stress of daily life, many people are turning to massage therapy as a natural way to relieve sore and tired muscles. Becoming a registered massage therapist requires that the therapist participates in 500 hours of training.


  1. Choose a college that offers massage therapy courses and is accredited by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massages and Bodywork. It is very important that the school you choose to attend is accredited.

  2. Complete the required course of study. A massage therapy program should contain at least 500 hours of training as well as classes is physiology, biology and anatomy. Achieve the best possible GPA you can to improve your chances of getting hired upon completion of the program.

  3. Send a copy of your school transcript and diploma along with the application fee to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massages and Bodywork. Be sure that all paperwork that you send in with the application has been notarized by an authorized notary.

  4. Wait for a letter of acceptance to come to you in the mail. Choose a date and time to take the test that is convenient for you and then send the paperwork back into the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massages and Bodywork to reserve the requested date for testing.

  5. Take the certification exam at the time, place and date that you requested. You must pass the certification exam to be certified as a massage therapist. You will receive notice in writing about the results of the testing.
