How to Become a Florist
Are you looking for a profession that is fun, rewarding and allows you to use your creative side all day long? If you have a natural ability to design, and general knowledge about cut flowers, you may want to consider becoming a florist. This honorable profession requires no college degree and offers skills that you can quickly learn, which once developed can lead you into having a business of your own.
On the job training - By applying for a job with your local florist you will learn a lot of the required skills on the job. You will learn about different flowers and plant care. You will learn which flowers work better together and tips and tricks to making attractive and long lasting arrangements. You may want to speak to a local florist prior to the major holidays such as Valentine's Day, Mothers Day and Christmas to see if they will be able to use an extra set of hands.
Community college or online training - There are floral design classes and other relevant training that are offered by many community colleges as well as accredited four-year universities. There are specialty programs such as Floral Design Institute and Stuppy Floral Education and Design Center and others. If a specialty program is not available in your area and depending on how much time you have and how much money you want to invest in your education, you may want to look into the online programs that are now available in this area. If you are looking at being independent or opening your own florist, you will find that some business classes will come in handy.
Specialized training - Once you have learned the basics, you may want to take some classes in the specific elements of being a florist. There are whole programs designed around being a wedding florist and learning the unique skills associated with being able to produce the flowers required for this big event.
Certification - Although this is not required to become a florist, becoming a Certified Floral Designer makes a statement and gives your customers confidence in your skills and abilities. Certification is available through the American Institute of Floral Designers as well as through other state specific organizations.
