Securing Your Credit Card Numbers: Keeping your credit card numbers safe is one way that you can avoid identity theft. If you have to give your credit card number over the phone, be sure that you made the call and you are providing it to a trustworthy source. Never write your credit card number on a check or on envelopes. Make sure that you shred pre-approved credit card applications before discarding them. This will help to minimize the risk of identity theft.



Create Strong Password on Your Credit Card Accounts: Securing your credit card accounts with a strong password can help to stop identity theft. Make strong passwords that cannot be guessed easily. Never use your mother's maiden name as a password. It is easy for unscrupulous individuals to obtain your mother's maiden name from places such as your credit report. Someone can use false pretense and request a copy of your credit report. For example, they can claim that you will be working for them or that you will be renting a property from them.



Check Your Credit Report: Request a copy of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies. The federal law requires that everyone is entitled to one free copy of their credit report annually, from each of the three credit bureaus, which are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. When you receive your credit report, check for suspicious activities such as fraudulent accounts or address changes. You can avoid identity theft by taking this simple step.



Inspect Your Statements: Each month when you receive your credit card statements, look for any charges that you are not aware of. If you find something that indicates fraudulent activity, report it to your credit card company immediately. If you stopped receiving statements and you did not sign up for paperless billing, check with your credit card number, as well as the post office to determine if there was a change of address.
