How to Amend a State Tax Return
If you notice an error with your state income tax return after filing, it is a good idea to turn in an amended state tax return as soon as possible. However, most states accept amended returns for at least three years and sometimes four. The IRS is available to help you through the process of amending a return if needed. Learn how to amend a state tax return by following a few simple steps.
Required Items
- Original tax returns
- Deduction receipts
- Form 1040X
- W-2
- State amendment form
Revise you federal income tax first before amending the state income tax. Download and fill out a Form 1040X with your revisions and corrections at the website of the IRS. Mail the form in and do not forget to attach a new check for the difference in taxes if additional taxes are owed as a result of correcting your errors.
Locate an amendment form for your state. You can call the State Department of Revenue and request a copy to be sent via US mail. The federal website for the IRS also supplies links for the Department of Revenue for each state. Form numbers for amendments usually contain the letter "X," which makes them easy to select.
- Fill out a state amendment form carefully and send it into the Department of Revenue for your state. Take a moment to double-check your calculations, corrected income, filing status and deductions to prevent more errors. Include copies of the federal 1040X amendment with your state amendment. Be sure and attach any required receipts with your new revised filings. Amending your return may cause a change in tax status resulting in taxes due. Be sure and include a check for the amount owed or wait for a refund if that is the case.
