How to Add Sync to a New Ford Explorer

Automobile manufacturer Ford has technology available on its vehicles called SYNC that allows drivers to use a variety of features similar to OnStar, seen in GM vehicles. All newer Ford model vehicles come equipped with SYNC. Owners need to activate the features. As an incentive, the first three years are free. Beginning with the fourth year, there is an annual subscription available for $60.

  1. Visit the SYNC website and complete registration. It requires a username and password created by you. The benefits include downloading applicable upgrades at a later date and patches. The SYNC technology is a type of software, and upgrades are necessary to keep it running at peak performance. During registration, users are required to enter identifying details which include the make, model and VIN number. Most of the information required is found on your vehicle's registration forms and insurance card.

  2. Complete the activation. Upon entering the required information, the site then prompts you to activate SYNC in your Ford Explorer. When you reach the confirmation screen, scan the details for any errors and submit.

  3. Review the SYNC commands. They are located in the owner's manual. It outlines the various commands you can use. Import contacts from your cell phone into SYNC so that you can experience hands free calls. Mention the fact you have SYNC enabled on your Ford Explorer to your insurance agent. You may qualify for discounts because of the rise in collisions due to drivers using cell phones while driving.

  4. Routinely check for updates and patches. Visit the SYNC site at least one a month. If you sell or trade your vehicle, update via the site and let the new owner know if there is time left on the subscription.
