  1. Determine what options of credit card acceptance you need for your business.  If you only do business by phone and mail than you will not need a credit card machine.  However, if you have customers in your store throughout the day you will need a machine for running credit card transactions.  It is also possible to give your customers the option to pay by credit card at your website.

  2. Search the Internet for merchant providers.  You will find a list pages many pages long of companies.  Choose a few and do some research on them.  Check if they have any bad reviews on any websites or with the Better Business Bureau.

  3. Ask other businesses what merchant service company they use.  This will allow you to get customer review first hand finding out what companies to research more and which to stay away from.

  4. Call a few companies you have narrowed your search to and ask them questions. Compare the questions of the different companies.  Fees, customer service and contract cancellation policies are all things that you will need to compare.

  5. Determine which company is going to be the best for your business and get set up with them.  Call the company and get the process started since it could take a few days to get everything submitted and approved.

  6. Set up your credit card machine and online purchase system.  Talk with merchant service company about the process if you have any questions.  Your website developer should be able to set up your website to take payments online.
