How To Sew a Jewelry Bag

Do you have a treasured piece of jewelry that you want to protect at all costs? This may be an heirloom piece or a gift a loved one gave you for a special occasion. Your jewelry box may not provide enough protection for this item. Whip up a jewelry bag to keep it safe and secure when this is the case. This easy project won't take much time at all.

Even if you have limited sewing skills, you can sew a jewelry bag in very little time. This type of bag features a drawstring to ensure your jewelry does not fall out. It's a great way to organize and protect your valuables without fear of them being replaced. If you are giving jewelry as a gift, this is an easy way to do so.

  1. Decide which size of bag you need to make. This will depend on what you would like to store in the bag. Some choose to make a bag to hold one single piece while others prefer to make one bag to hold several pieces together, such as a matching set.

  2. Calculate the length and width of the finished bag. Double the length of the bag and add an additional 1.5". Add one-inch to the width of the bag. These will be your cutting measurements. For example, if you want a bag that is 4x6 inches, you will need to cut the fabric 5"x13.5".

  3. Cut your fabric. Once cut, your fabric will be a long strip. Seam allowances have already been built in. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing. The folded edge is the bottom of your bag.

  4. Iron the bag and pin the sides. Sew one side making sure to secure the end.

  5. On the other side of the bag, measure 3/4" down from the top. Sew the seam from the bottom of the bag to the place you just marked. Backstitch to secure the seam. Fold the top edge down 1/4" and iron flat.

  6. Fold this edge again, 1/2" this time. Iron flat. Once this step has been completed, the top of your bag should meet at the point where you stopped the seam in step five.

  7. Stitch the top seam of the bag. Take care to ensure you don't sew the two halves of the bag together. Now you need to flip the bag so you can see the right side. Press flat again.

  8. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to fit through the sleeve you just created. Make sure it is long enough to tie off also. Slide this ribbon through the flap and secure the ends. Now your bag is ready for use.
