How To Remove Lenses From Eyeglasses
There are many reasons why a person may need to remove the lenses from their glasses. It may be the need to repair scratches in the lens, transfer lenses to a new frame of the same type, among many other reasons. Removing the lenses is a very simple task and at most will only require you to use a small screwdriver.
There are two main types of frames: Thicker solid plastic, typically one solid piece around the lenses, and wire framed glasses. The removal of a lens is similar in both cases. In most situations simply applying pressure to the lenses with the thumbs and pressing on them is adequate to pop the lens free. This is the preferred method for thicker frames, as it may cause bending in thinner wire frames.
It is important to note that you should not force the lens out. If they will not pop out with only a slight pressure then other steps may be required; too much force may damage the frames. For older thick plastic frames you may need to soak the glasses in a bowl of hot water, or use a hairdryer to soften the plastic slightly.
Other methods for wire frames requires removing the screws from both sides of the frame. The screws are very small and typically require screw drivers found in eyeglass repair kits. These can be found in nearly all drug stores, or grocery stores in the medical or pharmacy areas and cost very little. Small screwdrivers in tool kits, or computer repair kits tend to work just as well. To remove the lens, one simply must loosen or remove the screws where the frame meets the arm of the glasses. This will ease the tension on the lens and allow them to pop out with ease.
