How To Make Storage in a Small Closet

Closets are excellent sources of storage space for items ranging from clothing to precious antiques. However, the number of homeowners who fail to completely use their storage space is staggering, as it is very simple to install extra storage space in even the smallest of closets.

  1. Assess your storage options for the closet. Consider adding storage shelves, a closet rod, or a shoe-rack. Closet rods are particularly effective in adding space if there is not already a rod in place, or if there is room for another.

  2. Determine what type of items you will store in the closet. Small closets are often found in bathrooms where they are used to store items such as towels and washcloths, but can also be found in hallways and bedrooms.

  3. Install a closet rod if you would like to store clothing that can be placed on hangers in the closet. Closet rods and the hardware used to install them can be bought at nearly every hardware or home improvement store, and are easily installed.

  4. Add a shoe-rack to your closet if you have a great deal of extra shoes that would be better stored in a rack than on a shelf. Shoe-racks are often completely assembled before you purchase them and are typically placed on the back of closet doors, where they do not limit storage in other areas of the closet.

  5. Install shelves in your closet in order to store clothing, towels, and other miscellaneous items. Shelves are slightly more difficult to install than the previous storage methods, but are well-worth the work.
