How To Level the Ground for a Pool

Aboveground pools can provide hours of summer fun as long as they are properly installed. A big part of that installation process is locating the pool in a spot level in the yard. Pools located in unlevel or unprepared spots are dangerous and at risk of collapsing. Here are the steps for safely leveling the ground for your future pool.

Supplies

  • Pool

  • Bobcat

  • Shovel

  • Rake

  • 2 x 4's

  • Drill

  • Hammer

  • Tape measure

  • Level

  • 1/2 inch bit

  • 1/4 inch steel rod

  • Sand

  • Yard roller

  1. Select the back yard location for your pool. Try to find the spot which looks even.

  2. Use the Bobcat to remove the topsoil on the area.

  3. Remove any rocks or other debris.

  4. Determine the size of the pool installing. Make sure the area is of adequate size for your pool.

  5. Use a 2 x 4 with a level attached to the top to find the high and low spots in the area. Make sure the 2 x 4 is the same length as the pool will be in diameter.

  6. Measure over to the center of the 2 x 4.  Use the power drill for a 1/2 inch hole completely through the 2 x 4.

  7. Take the 2 x 4 and lay it down in the area of the pool. Run the 1/4 inch rod through the center of the 2 x 4 and drive the rod into the ground. Lift the 2 x 4 off of the rod.

  8. Fill the area where the pool will be placed with sand.

  9. Use a rake to shovel to spread it out. Make sure there is at least a two inch base of sand over the entire pool area.

  10. Take your 2 x 4 and replace it over the rod. Spin the 2 x 4 manually in a clockwise direction.

  11. This will level out any high or low spots in the sand.

  12. Remove the 2 x 4 and the rod from the sand area.

  13. Use your garden hose to saturate the sand.

  14. Use a yard roller into a tight base for your pool. If you do not have a yard roller, they can be rented at most home improvement stores.
