Home and Building Contents Insurance

Home and building contents insurance, though not required, is a worthwhile investment if you rent a house or apartment. A landlord’s building or home insurance will not cover your personal items. Whether you own irreplaceable or replaceable items, you will have peace of mind knowing some compensation will come your way in the event of a loss.

  • Contents insurance is sold with homeowner’s insurance, but can be purchased by renters of any kind.

  • Home and building contents insurance covers your personal possessions while located in a rented house, duplex, condo, studio or apartment. These possessions may not be permanently attached to the property.

  • Contents insurance covers fire, damage, theft, vandalism and acts of nature.

  • Though contents insurance cannot replace keepsakes, photos, a monetary settlement can at least give some sort of relief. Expensive items, such as electronics, furniture, clothing, some jewelry and kitchen appliances can all be replaced.

  • You can shop online for contents insurance, or you can call an insurance company or an agent for quotes. You can also call your auto insurance company, they may also offer contents insurance.

  • Building and home contents insurance can be affordable. If you are unsure of the value of certain items, you may have an appraiser take a professional look at the items to avoid overvaluing and incurring a larger premium.

  • You can receive a discount on contents insurance for the following: being a non-smoker, as it means a lower risk of fire; a security system that detracts burglars; a community safety program; the location of the garage; and home renovations.
