Your child's pediatrician is one of the most important support systems your family has. There are a few basic things every parent should know about their pediatrician. If yours hasn't discussed these issues with you, just ask. They should be more than willing to share.
1. What is educational background?
You should know when your pediatrician graduated from college and where he did his residency. Ask about ongoing training and professional development opportunities he takes part in. Medicine is a rapidly changing field and you want a pediatrician who stays up to date on the latest research and best practices.
2. Is his license in good standing?
Find out if his license has ever been questioned or revoked. Ask if he has been part of any lawsuits or investigations.
3. What are his specialties and limitations?
A pediatrician may be an expert at the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, but uncomfortable prescribing medication for mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety. Find out where his limitations are and who he refers to in those cases.
4. Who is his backup?
You need to know who takes over if the pediatrician is unavailable to see your child, for example who will care for your child if she gets sick while the pediatrician is on vacation. Ask if parents are notified in advance if someone else will be seeing their child. Find out what to do if you need care for your child or have questions after office hours.
5. Are any other benefits offered?
Unexpected services may be available. Some pediatricians offer nutrition counseling or ear piercing.
