Different Ways to Paint Furniture

A great place to search for new furniture pieces is at a secondhand store or garage sale. You can save a lot of money over retail, and then be able to personalize the furniture piece to suit your personality and decorating style by painting the furniture. You can easily complete many different painting techniques that give that old furniture piece new life.

Antiquing

You can easily turn any wood furniture piece into an antique replica in no time by refinishing the piece with two tone paint with fine grit sandpaper.

  1. Remove the current paint finish by sanding down the surface of the piece lightly, this allows the paint to adhere to the rough sanded surface.

  2. Choose your accent color or another color that complements the color choice of your base color to use as the first coat.

  3. Paint the entire piece in a thin coat of your base color and allow time to dry thoroughly.

  4. Apply the top coat in your base color and allow the furniture piece to dry overnight.

  5. Sand down the furniture piece in areas that would normally get more wear and tear such as drawer fronts and the seat of a chair.

  6. Be creative and sand as much as you would like to expose your undercoat.

  7. Apply a clear coat to the finished product and allow the clear coat to sit for 12-18 hours depending on the temperature in your room.

Embellishment

You can embellish your furniture pieces easily to give them a fresh look. This technique is quick and easy and allows you to add your own personal touch to the furniture you are embellishing.

  1. Paint the furniture piece in a solid color that matches the design theme in the room in which you are going to place it.

  2. Add any embellishments that you have picked out from your local craft store or home improvement store. Add these peices when the paint is almost dry, yet still tacky.

  3. Allow the embellishments to dry into the paint during the drying process.

  4. Add a clear top coat to seal in your embellishments and give your furniture piece a smooth and shiny finish.

  5. Allow the piece to sit and dry overnight before moving to the desired place in your home.
