How to Build Custom Shoe Shelves

DIY Shoe Shelves

One problem that virtually everyone has is shoe storage. The problem is where do you put them? Shoes don’t stack well and they do eat up space. You can build a shelving system that will keep them organized and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Items you will need (this will make three shelves):

  • Three top shelves of one-inch by four-inch boards 36-inches long

  • Three bottom shelves of one-inch by 12-inch boards 36-inches long

  • Three sets of “L” brackets (three by three inches) to mount the top shelves

  • Three sets of “L” brackets (six by six inches) to mount the bottom shelves

  • Screws to secure the brackets to the wall and the shelves.

  • Screwdriver

  • Level

  1. Stain or paint your shelves now if you plan on doing so prior to this work.

  2. Try to locate studs in the wall you are mounting the shelving to. You can use molly bolts but screwing into studs is much sturdier and longer lasting.

  3. Mark the locations where you will be placing the first three six by six-inch  “L” brackets. It will take three brackets for each shelf both top and bottom.

  4. Mark one of the bottom shelves (one-inch by 12-inch boards) for mounting the bracket to. Make sure it will fit up against the wall. Check to make certain your markings are level. Mount the bracket to the shelf first and then put the shelf against the wall and mount it. This will be the first shelf and it should be at least high enough off the floor so you can store boots and high top shoes on the floor without hitting the shelf.

  5. Next repeat that process with one of the top shelves (one-inch by four-inch boards) using the three by three-inch brackets. As with the bottom shelves you will need three for each shelf for sturdiness. Place the location of the top shelves high enough to permit the toes of your shoes to fit underneath the shelf. You will be sliding your shoes underneath the top shelf. That shelf holds the shoes in place on the shelves.

  6. Repeat this process for as many shelves as you need for your shoe storage.
