About Automobile Service Station Attendants

Automobile service station attendants work at gas stations and provide services for customers. Station attendants do much more than just pump gas and you may not realize just how many duties they have. In addition to providing excellent customer service, an attendant must be knowledgeable about basic car mechanics and maintenance.


 

Education


A high school diploma or GED is usually preferred by most employers, although not required. Prospective employees should have some mechanical ability, know basic math and be able to work without close supervision. On the job training is the norm for service station attendants.


Duties


Service station attendants perform many services for customers including pumping fuel, washing windshields, checking fluid levels and checking tires for air pressure. An attendant sells and installs batteries, spark plugs, fan belts, windshield wiper blades and tires. Minor maintenance such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing spark plugs, rotating tires and replacing mufflers are a part of the job duties. Service station attendants may be required to clean the parking lot, restrooms and empty the trash. An attendant often has the responsibility of handling money and payments.


Requirements


Service station attendants work indoors and outdoors and a lot of standing, lifting and stooping is required. They must be able to perform physical activities and work with their hands. An attendant must look neat in appearance, be friendly, helpful and polite while working with the public. A service station attendant may often have to assist customers with information about local highways and give directions to lost travelers.


Salary


Salaries start at minimum wage, depending on experience and the pay can increase over time. Employers may pay attendants a commission on parts they sell. If allowed, service station attendants can also accept tips from customers for performing valuable services.
