Kotzebue is a city in Northwest Arctic Borough,Alaska.The population was 3,237 as of the 2005 census. Kotzebue is named after the Kotzebue Sound, which was named after Otto von Kotzebue, an explorer who surveyed the sound while searching for the Northwest Passage in service to Russia in1818. Kotzebue is home to a well known non-profit organization called the Maniilaq Association, an organization that provides health and social services to residents of Northwest Alaska. The Nullagvik Hotel is a nice place to stay in Kotzebue, located on Shore Avenue. The Bayside Restaurant and Hotel is also a popular place for visitors to stay. AMF Bowling Center is a popular hang out for locals and visitors. Vortac Lake is a popular fishing spot during the summer months. Kotzebue Middle School and June Nelson Elementary School are the biggest schools in the area.
