Updates & tips from Tom Tivol Jewelry & Gemstone Appraisals, LLC

"Semi Precious" as a Descriptive Term for Colored Gemstones

All of us who love colored gemstones learned the phrase "semi-precious" at one time or another, as describing certain colored gemstones that were less valuable than others, or those which may be worn during the day as opposed to the more precious gems which were reserved for evening wear. Included in this definition are the gemstones quartz, tourmaline, garnet, spinel, zoisite, peridot and topaz, among many others.

At some point in history, gemstones were classified in two divisions: Those worn more formally included diamond, pearl, emerald, ruby, sapphire and opal, while the balance of the world of colored stones were worn during the day. This classification was not scientific; rather it was cultural, almost like a caste system. As a result, many less expensive colored gemstones were inexpensively set in poorer quality metals, with less emphasis on beautiful design.

Professional Grade Jewelry and Gemstone Appraisals

Many times, jewelry sellers provide documents with each purchase, describing the item and providing a replacement cost.  This document may be used to insure jewelry through the buyer's home owner's or apartment renter's insurance company.  However, an appraisal is different.  An appraisal is written by a person having no relationship to the sale of the item.  It is an independent report, describing and evaluating the quality of the item and providing a researched value to protect the buyer in the event of damage, theft or loss of any kind.  Generally speaking, appraisals are written by professionally trained and experienced persons who have developed specific expertise in particular product areas of personal property valuation.  In the case of jewelry and gemstones, these persons are often G.I.A  graduate gemologists who have decades of jewelry business experience coupled with advanced appraisal training.  Their appraisals are more detailed, and take into account up-to-date researched values of like kind and quality gemstones and jewelry.

Attention Diamond Buyers! This is info you need to know!

Most diamonds today, especially those over 1.00 carats, and many under 1.00 carats, are sent to an independent laboratory for a grading report, before the jeweler purchases the stone. Most jewelers, even if they have some grading knowledge, rely on the information in the laboratory report when presenting the diamond to their customers. When presented with a report on the same diamond from a different laboratory, which may grade the stone very differently, many jewelers will opt out of any responsibility, saying they relied on the report they provided to their buyer, and they themselves have no independent knowledge of the diamond. They are merely gemstone merchants, selling a product.

This leaves the buyer confused, to say the least. It also brings to the surface important ethical and legal issues surrounding the purchase and sale of diamonds ...

OUTSTANDING BUSINESSMAN AND EXPERT APPRAISER

I have requested Mr. Tivol's services on two occassions. Once for a vintage watch and once for a Vietnam era Zippo Lighter. Both times he was very efficient and professional. I am extremely satisfied with his services and recommend him highly. He is the best in town!

Tom Tivol is the BEST!

My husband and I were nervous about meeting with a private jeweler to design my engagement ring, but Tom made the whole experience easy and fun. After just a few minutes meeting with him, it become obvious how well he understood the details of the diamond and design we ...wanted. His is truly an expert at what he does, and I'm certain that if we'd gone somewhere else we would not have had the same experience. I cannot recommend Tom enough ... make an appointment!
