I have seen some SEO companies use keyword ranking as testimonials, or "proof" of their ability. They will tell you a keyword and have you type it in and it will rank number 1. And you will be impressed. When an SEO firm shows you a handful or more of these little miracles, you may be really impressed and think that they are really experts, and they may be. But you should know...

The keyword you choose is everything in SEO. Many times a keyword shown does not have many searches, so it has no value. Google may show a lot of  pages on the Search Engine Results (SERP's) page, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are all "competition". It is pretty easy to rank for a word that is not typed in much.

For example, if I wanted to do the trick, I could tell you "search for 'big website builder'" and that's my site, at number 1. Wow, number 1 out of 27 million results, who cares? That term is only searched 110 times a month in a "broad" search and like never in an "exact" search. Or "seo success coach", that's my site also, number 1, so? nobody every types in "seo success coach", well not much.

On the other hand, real search terms, like "frp", is typed in 60,500 times in a 'broad' search and about 6600 times every month in an "exact" search, now that's a keyword worth ranking for. And yes, that is one of my clients in the top 5, fclp.com, they are in the number 5 spot today, but still a good ranking.
