"Mattress City USA, the rise and growth of a new retail giant. Today, as I was driving through a familiar city, one that I had called home for many years, I noticed a remarkable sign that caught my eye. After the many years of living in this fantastic city, a sign caught my attention. This city is a relatively vast area of businesses and homes, and a population of somewhere in the neighborhood of two-million people, with signs and billboards everywhere.

The sign that caught my attention was of a multi-color, in a scheme of the United States flag. Beautiful, Red, White, and Blue... I mention the colors of this sign, because it reminds me of a place where people are friendly, and the American spirit still thrives. This place was an unsuspecting mattress retailer, swamped with competition in the center of one of the fiercest markets in the country, downtown Tulsa, Ok. This retailer, located as close to the center of this metropolis as evidently possible, and positioned on the corner of Sheridan Avenue.

I mentioned Sheridan Avenue, due to the shear nature of this street. This is a street in the middle of downtown Tulsa, Ok, is infamous for the major league retailers, whom don't blink an eye at spending one hundred thousand dollars a month on advertising. This is truly a major league sport, the competition amongst retailers. What amazes me the most about this, is that a relatively unknown company, by the name of Mattress City USA, sprung up one day and called the corner of Sheridan avenue home.

It has now been three years, that this unknown entity made Tulsa home and they are still in the fight and ready for growth. It has long been believed that this one unique store was only a small branch of a major corporation, and perhaps a test of the Tulsa mattress retail market. With the ongoing methods and antics for the general business environment in a major competitive retail market, here stands an enigma. Mattress City USA is a store that has grown successfully, and withstood the beatings and bruises from the declining market and brutal competition. This enigma has grown and survived, when many larger companies around the country and local area has crumbled. My hat goes off to the manager, leaders and mentors for this phenomenon in the center of Tulsa, Ok.

On my passing by the retail landmark, I stopped in for something cold to drink and a bite to eat from a neighboring restaurant and posed a simple question to the waitress, "What rumors have you heard about Mattress City USA, the store down on the corner?". The waitress replied and said: "I hear that they are a major corporation, spanning three states, under assumed names and that they are planning a massive growth spurt in Tulsa." I won't mention the waitresses name; however, I am amazed on the interest of this retail on the corner of Sheridan. I have asked myself, as many others have asked, "Is this a large chain of stores", and if so, "How can they always provide that hometown feeling?". I don't have the answer, and maybe, I really don't want the answer. The one thing that I am sure of from talking to the surrounding retailers is that the customers are always satisfied, and they always go back for this amazing experience. This enigma is by far the talk of the town, and still growing strong. --Good luck, Mattress City USA, and keep up the home town feeling."
