On this day in 1762 the First St. Patrick's Day parade is held in New York City, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was held by Irish soldiers serving in the British Army. The parade came about due to the dramatic increase of Irish immigrants to the United States in the mid-nineteenth century, and soon the March 17th celebration became widespread. Blizzard of 1996 Begins: An East Coast blizzard began on this day in 1996 that killed 187 people and caused $3 billion in damages. Snow wasn't the only culprit - subsequent rains and flooding also contributed to the total damage.
