About Columbian Theatre

JC Rogers constructed the Columbian in 1892. After the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, he purchased paintings, pillars, and other artifacts to embellish his building in downtown Wamego. The six restored murals that hang in the theatre today were originally commissioned by the US Treasury and exhibited in the Government Building. Fourteen other paintings from the 1893 Columbian Exposition were discovered under the stage during the 1994 restoration of the building. The pillars he purchased are used in the gallery and the stone columns he returned with are located in the front of the building holding the second floor balcony.

Today, The Columbian Theatre is 119 years old. Not only can musicals and plays still be seen on the stage, but art exhibits are regularly displayed in the main floor gallery.

MUST Visit when in Wamego!!

The Columbian Theatre is wonderfully surprising! The painting in the Theater area are so neat and the history behind them is so cool! The Gallery was a lot of fun to walk through as well. The exhibit on the Chicago's Worlds Fair was very intriguing and it was fun to read about the ties to Wamego. The staff was very helpful and the building is beautiful! The Theatre is a MUST SEE!!!

I would NOT recommend renting the Columbian Theatre to anyone they will rip you off. The wedding reception we went to they made no last call for beer pulled the keg that still had beer in it at 9:30 the hall was rented until 10:30 Then the charged to girl renting the place for 5 more case of beer at $38.00 PER CASE. But told her she couldn"t have the beer they were charging her for, guess the 2 girls running the place must have a had a nice fathers party the next day with half a keg plus 5 cases of free beer, or did they just resell the beer the next poor renters of the Columbian? The beer was suppose to be reserve if needed. I wonder what the Kansas ATF would think about these practices. Wamego is a pretty small town to get a bad name for practices like this. It might be best to go down the road to some place in Manhattan.
But the Columbian Theatre is beautiful place I just have to wonder about the 2 girls running the show.
