All These Vessels Now Must Have AIS

Reading the US Coast Guard Final Rule 2015-01331 regarding expanded use of AIS equipment consists of 283 pages, and could take hours to accomplish. AIS Central (http://www.aiscentral.com) knows most mariners are just too busy to do that! However, every mariner needs to know if he must comply or is exempt from the rule, so I'm going to list all the new classes here for you in very condensed form: (1) AIS Class A device: The following vessels must have on board a properly installed, operational Coast Guard type-approved AIS Class A device: (i) A self-propelled vessel of 65 feet or more in length, engaged in commercial service. (ii) A towing vessel of 26 feet or more in length and more than 600 horsepower, engaged in commercial service. (iii) A vessel that is certificated to carry more than 150 passengers. (iv) A self-propelled vessel engaged in dredging operations in or near a commercial channel or shipping fairway in a manner likely to restrict or affect navigation of other vessels. (v) A self-propelled vessel engaged in the movement of:     (A) Certain dangerous cargo as defined in subpart C of part 160 of this chapter, or     (B) Flammable or combustible liquid cargo in bulk that is listed in 46 CFR 30.25-1, Table 30.25-1. (2) AIS Class B device Use of a Coast Guard type-approved AIS Class B device in lieu of an AIS Class A device is permissible on the following vessels if they are not subject to pilotage by other than the vessel Master or crew:     (i) Fishing industry vessels;     (ii) Vessels identified in paragraph (b)(1)(i) of this section that are certificated to carry less than 150 passengers and that-    (A) Do not operate in a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) or Vessel Movement Reporting System (VMRS) area and   (B) Do not operate at speeds in excess of 14 knots; and   (iii) Vessels engaged in dredging operations. Pretty simple, when you remove all the extra stuff! To make it even easier for you, I've prepared a pdf version which I'll be happy to send to anyone who requests it. Just email me: david@aiscentral.com. AIS Central (www.aiscentral.com) offers top-quality AIS equipment from all the leading manufacturers. We can fill all your requirements, whether for Class A or Class B. Please visit our site, or call or text us at 360 600 9095, for consultation, (FREE, of course!) The new rule goes into effect on March 2, 2015, and you have up to one year to comply, but i would suggest you don't wait till the last minute, as we can supply your needs now, and the demand will become much heavier the later it gets, which could impact compliance. (And could result in some unpleasantness such as fines or restrictions- which nobody wants!) Looking forward to helping you comply! Dave Hallett National Sales Manager AIS Central ...read more

The US Coast Guard Expands Use Of AIS

The current security issues facing American maritime operations have mandated new safety and security measures for the protection of mariners, both offshore and on inland waterways. AIS -Automatic Identification Systems- allow the US Coast Guard to monitor arrivals and departures at all US ports, and give mariners the opportunity to actually see and be seen on the water .Unlike radar, which simply shows a "target", AIS gives all the details of the vessel- it's name, location, flag (country it's registered in), call sign, size, destination, even it's ETA. As of March 2, 2015, several new classes of vessels must now install and use AIS, as required by the Coast Guard. There are two separate classes of AIS equipment: Class A and Class B. Class A must be installed on larger commercial vessels, while Class B can be used on fishing vessels and smaller craft. Estimates range between 14,000 and 22,000 vessels which now must comply with the USCG ruling. A condensed version of the USCG rule can be found on our website at: www.aiscentral.com/final_rule.html, detailing the different types of vessels which now come under the ruling. AIS Central, (www.aiscentral.com) provides top-quality equipment, installation and service of the major brands of AIS, including Com-Nav, Digital-Yacht, Furuno, I com, Koden, SAAB, Simrad and Si-Tex. Any new marketing ideas?

Like the rest of you the economy has really taken a chunk of our revenues. Every sector of our market has been affected and in turn has reduced spending. Unfortunately our service is a service that many people have cut back on and pushed back until they feel as though they have the extra capital to spend. This has forced us to drastically reduce our marketing budget. Does anyone out there have any ideas for a working low cost solution? Flyers are cheap and all but they just don't have the same return as more expensive approaches (duh). And if you have ever had to spend countless hours' spaming the community with flyersâ€Â¦well I don't really have to tell you the feeling of dread that comes with "Flyer day". Any ideas? ...read more
