4 dealers couldn't help me with getting radios the same day! I was getting very discouraged! My last phone call and bingo! They had the 30 radios I needed! I was able to meet the job requirement last night and it saved the job! Joel, you really helped me a lot and not only did you get the radios same day but you gave me a better cost then all the other dealers! You didn't take advantage of me just because you had them! An iMac, MacBook or MacBook Pro is an investment. The price on these computers is typically double or even more than the price of a Windows computer running the same hardware specifications. So it only makes sense to spend a little on some upgrades as it ages rather than going out to buy the latest iMac or MacBook. By doing some upgrades, you can extend the usable life of your iMac or MacBook for a few years. That is well worth the expense when you consider that the cost of upgrading is a fraction of the cost of buying a new computer from Apple. Here are some upgrades that can make a significant difference in the speed and operation of your iMac or MacBook. Depending on your technical expertise, you may be able to do these on your own, but most users will require professional help. More Memory Memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) is consumed when you open and run programs. Memory is a temporary holding area for all the work you are doing until you save that work back to the hard drive. When you run several programs simultaneously, it is easy to consume all of the available memory. When this happens, the hard drive has to be used for some of the temporary information. The hard drive is slower to read from and write to than memory so it slows your work down. That memory is not emptied or freed up until you close some programs or reboot the computer. When you add more memory to your iMac, you essentially increase your temporary working space which allows you to open more programs and do more things without slowing down. Solid State Hard Drive All your programs, photos, videos and other files are stored on your hard drive. The MacBook or iMac is constantly reading from and writing to the drive. This is the biggest bottle neck in a computer's performance because hard drives are slow relative to the rest of the system. A typical hard drive has spinning platters, an electric motor and a moving arm that reads the data on the platters. When you replace your hard drive with a newSolid State Drive or SSD, you drastically increase the speed of reading and writing files. Since the hard drive is where your files are stored, you will likely need help from an IT technician to duplicate your data from the old spinning hard drive to the new Solid State Drive. OSX Mavericks Mavericks is the latest operating system from Apple. It has many new features like improved multi-monitor display options, improved battery life and faster email downloads just to name a few. You can install Mavericks from the App Store, but if you have an older MacBook or iMac, you may need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first and it may require a memory upgrade to install. It seems like each day there is news of yet another innovative hacking scheme. Thieves are constantly thinking up new ways to rip you off. One of the most recent methods they have come up with is router hacking. To understand this, we need to look at some of the things your router does for you. First of all it provides a way for your computer, cell phone, tablet and other devices to talk to web sites and mail servers on the Internet. It also functions as an address book of sorts. You have probably seen an IP address before. It is a series of numbers like 216.39.222.56. Each server on the Internet has a unique IP address. It is sort of like a street address because your computer uses the IP address to find the server. But your computer does not start with that address. It starts with what you type into the browser. For example, when you want to do some online banking, you may type in "www.chase.com" and pull up the Chase web site. For your computer to find the server that hosts the "www.chase.com" web site, it has to ask your router for the IP address for that name. Your router does not contain an address list for the entire Internet so it turns around and asks your service provider (AT&T;, Comcast, Windstream, Entouch, etc) for the IP address for "www.chase.com". Once your computer is provided the IP address, it can communicate with the Chase banking site and display the web page where you will enter your username and password to access your accounts. Here is the problem. The hackers can tell your router to query their own server instead of asking your service provider for the IP address for "www.chase.com". When this happens, the hacker's server lies to your computer and sends it to the wrong IP address. When your computer then communicates with this server at the wrong address, that server pretends to actually be "www.chase.com". You even see a web site that looks just like the real Chase banking web site. So you innocently type in your username and password and the thieves have it. Hackers can use the same ruse to gain access to your Gmail, Yahoo!, facebook or any other online account. So how do they get into your router? There are a few ways this can happen, but most often it is via malware downloaded on a computer on your network. There are security vulnerabilities on many of the most popular router models and the malware takes advantage of these to make malicious changes to your router's configuration. How to protect your router Of course a new hacking scheme can come out tomorrow so you are never 100% safe from hackers, but here are some things you can do to try to protect yourself. You may need to contact the support for your router manufacturer to get help with some of these tasks: Change the user name used to login to your router. Most routers use "admin". If your router will allow you, change it. Change the default password to login to your router. Update the firmware on your router to the latest version. The firmware is the program that manages your router. Most models allow you to easily check for and install updates. The router manufacturers fix security vulnerabilities as they are found and firmware updates is how you install the fixes. Most routers allow remote administration. This means if you know the username and password, you could login to your router to configure it even if you are not home. Disable this feature. The holidays are over and everyone’s back to their daily grind. Those of you out there who were lucky enough to get theBlackBerry Stormover the holidays must be settling in nicely with your new RIM device. It takes a while to get used to but once you master it, it might as well replace your best friend right? Interestingly enough, I must say that theBlackBerry Stormis still generating a lot of buzz. Part of the reason is because this is the first device that RIM has launched with a pure consumer market in mind. Business is business and this device can serve as a workhorse but when it comes to web browsing, multimedia, music and more, theBlackBerry Stormseems to be a winner in everyone’s book. The other reason it’s still generating a buzz is the way in which Verizon Wireless has tackled the marketing of the hot touch screen phone. They are selling this one for an amazingly low price and for someone who is looking for a new contract or is getting ready to renew, it is a great product with amazing technology for a fraction of what it really costs. Regardless of critics, theBlackBerry Stormis here to stay and will be a major device for 2009 to compete with theiPhoneand theG1(and whatever else is expected to launch this year).
