I'm sure most of you have seen Identity Theft in the news for the past several months, right? What most people don't know about Identity Theft, can hurt them the most. There are actually 5 types of Identity Theft. (Credit Fraud, Social Security Fraud, Driver's License Fraud, Medical Fraud, and Criminal/character Fraud). The reason I say that these other 4 forms of ID theft can hurt you, is because most ID protection/Credit Protection plans only cover one of these ID theft cases, NOT all 5 of them. Most companies ONLY protect you from Credit Fraud. Most of you already know what Credit Fraud is, so this article will not cover that area of ID theft. We will just go over the other areas of ID theft that most of you may not be aware of, and how this lack of information can hurt you. Social Security Fraud: This is when someone gets a job with your Social Security Number. The company that hired the individual will report the earnings to the IRS. After some time, the IRS may notify you that you're being audited for non payment of back-taxes. Driver's License Fraud: This happens when someone gets pulled over, and gives your information to the law enforcement officer. The person who gave the officer your information will simply ignore the summons, and you will have your driver's license suspended for non-payment, and a warrant placed for your arrest. Medical Fraud: This happens when someone gets medical care using your information. All Medical records are now stored electronically (E.H.R.) and shared with insurance companies and the US Dept. of Health. This system of keeping all medical records electronically was mandated by recent changes to the healthcare system. Someone using your ID to get medical care effects you in many different ways. First, if they suffer from an allergy, it now becomes a part of your record. Any medications they receive, also become a part of your medical record. If the person has a disease like HIV, that also gets put into your medical records. This can effect the type of healthcare you receive, and the limits of healthcare you receive. Most individuals are not aware of the fact that there are caps on the total amount of healthcare a person can receive. Criminal/Character Fraud: This happens when someone gets arrested or identified as the person of interest in a crime under your name. The best way to protect yourself from ALL 5 areas of ID theft is to hire a company that specializes in ID theft protection and restoration services. It's very important that this company has licensed private investigators on staff. In addition, this ID theft and restoration company should also have a partnership with a law firm to assist in legal matters concerning the ID theft.
