I was an inmate in the late 1970's and physical punishment was used frequntly. I realize there was a need for control, but situations got really out of hand. I was locked in the cell area on the third floor of what was then called five-five hall. Even in winter we were only allowed to wear shirts & shorts, NO shoes. I faced an even worse situation which was being locked in a dark cell fo 39 days. I wasn't allowed contact, or any conversation and was only given a shower once a week. They often handcuffed guys to the bars while standing on tip-toes and left them for hours at a time. There was a great deal of violence between inmates, but the guards were involved in their share as well.
