My Professional Plumber

5.0

By Anonymous

I got "My Professional Plumbers" name from the list put out by Rennai. This list has not always been reliable so I went to the BBB to vet them out. I picked the one day the BBB was having their golf tournament and they were closed. So I called MPP anyway. I spoke with a young lady (I'm 73) who convinced me to give them a try. They turned out to be prompt, clean, competent and reasonably priced. They diagnosed a problem in my Rennai hot water heater, got overnight delivery on the needed part, and fixed it the next day. I recommend these folks. - Dennis Milewski, Knoxville, TN ...read more

Baby Its Cold Outside!

As another Winter season approaches, I’d like to paint a picture for you. It’s one where you find yourself lying in bed, contemplating your life choices. As you lay there considering whether or not youreallyneed that job, your mind drifts to what brought you to such a crossroads. Was it staying out way too late? Or maybe that late-night snack, youknewwould wreak havoc? Nope. It was that gamble you took with mother nature, and guess what? You lost. In all seriousness, how many times have we all drifted comfortably asleep, our homes a comfy 70°, maybe 72°, only to wake up the next morning with Jack Frost, as an uninvited guest. If we’re being honest, most of us don’t’ give our HVAC systems a second thought, until that first extreme temperature change. I mean you push the button, and the heat (or air conditioning for that matter) does its thing, right? Well that is, until it doesn’t. Playing Russian roulette with your HVAC equipment, is a gamble you don’t want to take. Many years ago, before I met my husband, I was you. The consumer, who all of a sudden had the need to contact a service company. I didn’t know where to start, or who to call. More importantly I had no idea what had brought me to that place. Again, I push the button, and it does the work, right? Well unfortunately in my case, my lack of understanding the basic maintenance my HVAC equipment needed, led me to costly repairs, and a flooded equipment closet. Regular homeowner maintenance like filter changes, and yearly service inspections from your local HVAC company is critical in ensuring you don’t find yourself in the same situation I did. At the end of the day, no matter what the season, protecting your investment is vital. We’ve put together some recommendations you as the homeowner can do to not only protect your investment, but also help to combat the ever-rising energy costs we all face. Check and/or change your filters.Make sure to check, clean and or change your filters on a monthly basis. A dirty air filter restricts the air flow to your unit, decreasing its efficiency, and making your equipment work harder. Which brings me to our next recommendation Replacement of your existing HVAC System. Now you’re probably thinking, “Nickole I’m trying to SAVE money!” I understand that, but just hear me out.  If your current system is 10 years old or older, the amount of money you’re paying in utility bills is going to reflect this. Due to the huge changes made in the last 10-20 years in energy efficient equipment, the cost for upgrading to a more efficient system will be evident immediately on your monthly bills. The newer, higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a measure of the energy efficiency off your air conditioning), units boast a 20% savings on your heating and cooling costs. In addition to the savings, many of the older units run off the refrigerant R-22. Due to the environmental impacts, the EPA made a decision that R-22 needed to be phased out, and therefore manufacturers have stopped production altogether. What does that mean for you, the consumer? Well it means that refrigerant in your system, will soon be long gone.  As some of the older air conditioning units (ones manufactured prior to 2010) only take R-22, those units will have to be converted to the new refrigerant by a HVAC company. A process that can get costly, quickly. Think about it this way, how many of you still have a land line phone? Probably not many, with the advancement of cell phones, and the cost-effective service plans offered by cell carriers, make a land line virtually obsolete. So most of us have ditched the land line, upgraded to the phone and service that suits our needs and keep it moving, right? Well this is no different. Eventually you’re going to find yourself ditching that old system, because the benefits of the new systems are just too great. The average person upgrading to a 3Ton 16 SEER Air Conditioner, and a 96% 60k BTU Furnace System with us will usually spend anywhere between $6000-$8000 this of course is dependent on many factors, and a definite price can’t be given without a full survey of the customer needs, but I think you get the picture.   Here is an awesome tool from NATE or North American Technical Excellence, that will show you how much upgrading to a more energy efficient system can save you! http://www.hvacradvice.com/site/308/Tips-and-Resources/Energy-Savings-Calculator Investing in a programmable thermostat.Using a programmable thermostat, can be a great benefit as it allows you to set the temperature in your home based on a variety of factors, such as keeping your home at a set temperature when no one is home. Adjusting your registers or vents. Since cold air falls and heat rises, if you happen to live in a 2 or more-story home, opening your registers on the 1st floor, and closing the ones on the second or higher will help to keep the heat where you want it. Inspect your windows, and doors.Check your windows, and doors for any leaky areas, and seal them. Visually Inspect your HVAC Equipment. Check for excess heat and/or water coming from your HVAC equipment Professional HVAC Inspection. Contact us today for an inspection of your HVAC equipment. Ideally you should have your HVAC equipment inspected twice a year, which will help you identify any potential problems you may encounter with your equipment, as well as ensure that your equipment is running efficiently. During the inspection we’ll check your filters, motors, belts, safety switches, electrical switches, contacts, burner assembly, and refrigerant levels. In addition, our technicians will discuss with you the benefits of having a maintenance service agreement, even if we didn’t install your equipment, to make you’re covered going forward. Remember your HVAC equipment isn’t just a purchase, it’s an investment. Just like your vehicle, it requires regular maintenance to ensure that it performs efficiently, and also to identify any small problems, that could potentially become large, costly ones!   ...read more

The story of how DUCTZ of Maryville - Southern Knoxville started

DUCTZ of Maryville Southern Knoxville was started by me Steve Tayloe.  Thinking back I have always been in service oriented work. It started when I was 10 years old as a newspaper delivery boy for 5 years, a grocery store employee for 9 years, and senior service field technician in the pulp and paper industry for 28 years. In that time I was only out of work for three months. The grocery store chain closed up in 1979. In 2007 the company I worked 28 years for decided to do cut backs. I was one of the victims. I was upset at first. I said to myself I’ll be able to find another job. Boy was I wrong. I was used to knocking on doors to find a job. I was wrong again. To find work you had to do it through the unemployment office, on the internet, and going to job fairs. The last jobs fair I went to I waited 45 minutes just to get in the door. Listening to the news was depressing “more job losses”.  After four months of no work I was willing to take any job. I applied for low wage jobs and was told “you are to over qualified”. What to do! Go home and boo woo? Sit back and ask the government to give me give me? I was not raised to take government hand outs.  My unemployment was about to run out. The only other option I could think of was “create my own job”.  I researched how to start a company. It is not simple. I should have known or more people would have done it. I would not give up. While searching to start a company I saw franchising. It was still starting a company, but with less headaches. It was not easy, but that is another story.   Now the big question, what to do? I know it has to be service oriented. I wanted to provide a service that people need. I found a franchise broker. I am limited in money. I am given a list of possible franchises. Most of them were to provide services for peoples wants not needs. In the list I see DUCTZ. What is DUCTZ? HVAC system and air duct cleaning. I had my air ducts cleaned when I had my HVAC unit replaced a few years ago.  When doing my research I find it is about improving the indoor air quality in your home and work place. Yes that is something people need. It is more than just going in and blowing some dirt around and collecting it. You need to understand how HVAC systems work and how duct work is installed. For 28 years I was in the pulp and paper industry and learned how to condition wood into paper now I am taking a lateral move and learning how to condition air. I see a lot of similarities. I can do this. I open DUCTZ of Maryville - Southern Knoxville serving most of east Tennessee. During my research I find there is National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). It is an association created by a group of HVAC system and air duct cleaners. The association was created because of the need to get safe and proper cleaning practices started. DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern Knoxville are proud members of NADCA. NADCA is recognized by the EPA (Environment Protection Agency)  Another reason NADCA was started was the air duct cleaning scams. Air duct cleaning is one of the biggest scams happening in the country. You have these advertisements offering $99.00 whole house duct cleaning. Once they get into your home they may stir up the dust in your ducts and have it all over your home. We in the business call them the go and blow companies. In most cases they end up with $400.00 to $600.00 of your money in their pocket. You only have half the ducts cleaned and the air handling unit is still dirty. You start your HVAC system back up and you have more dust blowing into your home. This can happen in commercial work as well. As I mentioned in my search for a company I wanted to provide a service people needed. Not all people need their HVAC system cleaned. DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern Knoxville is an honest company and will say “you do not need your system cleaned”. This was taught to me in my Christian upbringing. DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern Knoxville are members of the Better Business Bureau. We have zero complaints since or doors opened in 2008. We have an A+ rating.  I started DUCTZ as a needed service and continue to operate the company that way. We provide our customers with an assessment before we do any cleaning. During the assessment I am looking for dirt, signs of microbial growth, leaks in the duct work, insulation missing in the air handling unit, insulation missing on the duct work, and damaged duct work. I want to do the assessment before we schedule to do any cleaning. This lets the customer know the cost up front and it gives them time to make the decision to have the work done. It also lets the customer learn what DUCTZ can do to improve their HVAC system to help in the air quality and efficiency. DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern Knoxville provide free assessments.    An HVAC system has two main components. The components are in the initials HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Heating and air conditioning is the unit. Ventilation is the duct work. When we say system cleaning we clean both main components. At times just one of the main components needs cleaning not both. In most of these cases it is when the main unit is replaced.  A lot of times the reason the HVAC system needs cleaned the ventilation system was not sealed properly when it was installed or damaged since installation. This affects the efficiency of the HVAC system as well. You are pulling in or blowing out air where you are not supposed too, which is adding more load on the HVAC unit. These changes in temperature around the leaks can cause condensation that promotes microbial growth. This is a big problem in the south.            There is a big word used in air duct cleaning “SANITIZE”. That means spraying chemicals into the duct work. If the duct work and air handler are cleaned properly there is no need for sanitizing duct work. Just spraying in a sanitizer in the duct work will not sanitize all the duct work. If you are allergic to the chemical it is very difficult to remove once it is in the duct work.  In Tennessee if you are using an EPA registered chemical you have to have a Tennessee State microbial pest control license. DUCTZ of Maryville- Southern Knoxville has their microbial pest control license. Our Tennessee state charter number is 4377. We use C-1 made by BBJ Environmental Solutions. We mainly use the product in the air handling unit. It is designed to be used in the duct work as well. I have made this article long enough. You have a little background history of me. Why I started DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern Knoxville. Some information what DUCTZ can do for you.  If you feel that you need to have your HVAC system cleaned I would be glad to do an assessment of your system. We do commercial work as well.  DUCTZ of Maryville – Southern KnoxvilleLocally owned and operated    257 N.
