As another Winter season approaches, I’d like to paint a picture for you. It’s one where you find yourself lying in bed, contemplating your life choices. As you lay there considering whether or not youreallyneed that job, your mind drifts to what brought you to such a crossroads. Was it staying out way too late? Or maybe that late-night snack, youknewwould wreak havoc? Nope. It was that gamble you took with mother nature, and guess what? You lost. In all seriousness, how many times have we all drifted comfortably asleep, our homes a comfy 70°, maybe 72°, only to wake up the next morning with Jack Frost, as an uninvited guest. If we’re being honest, most of us don’t’ give our HVAC systems a second thought, until that first extreme temperature change. I mean you push the button, and the heat (or air conditioning for that matter) does its thing, right? Well that is, until it doesn’t. Playing Russian roulette with your HVAC equipment, is a gamble you don’t want to take. Many years ago, before I met my husband, I was you. The consumer, who all of a sudden had the need to contact a service company. I didn’t know where to start, or who to call. More importantly I had no idea what had brought me to that place. Again, I push the button, and it does the work, right? Well unfortunately in my case, my lack of understanding the basic maintenance my HVAC equipment needed, led me to costly repairs, and a flooded equipment closet. Regular homeowner maintenance like filter changes, and yearly service inspections from your local HVAC company is critical in ensuring you don’t find yourself in the same situation I did. At the end of the day, no matter what the season, protecting your investment is vital. We’ve put together some recommendations you as the homeowner can do to not only protect your investment, but also help to combat the ever-rising energy costs we all face. Check and/or change your filters.Make sure to check, clean and or change your filters on a monthly basis. A dirty air filter restricts the air flow to your unit, decreasing its efficiency, and making your equipment work harder. Which brings me to our next recommendation Replacement of your existing HVAC System. Now you’re probably thinking, “Nickole I’m trying to SAVE money!” I understand that, but just hear me out. If your current system is 10 years old or older, the amount of money you’re paying in utility bills is going to reflect this. Due to the huge changes made in the last 10-20 years in energy efficient equipment, the cost for upgrading to a more efficient system will be evident immediately on your monthly bills. The newer, higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a measure of the energy efficiency off your air conditioning), units boast a 20% savings on your heating and cooling costs. In addition to the savings, many of the older units run off the refrigerant R-22. Due to the environmental impacts, the EPA made a decision that R-22 needed to be phased out, and therefore manufacturers have stopped production altogether. What does that mean for you, the consumer? Well it means that refrigerant in your system, will soon be long gone. As some of the older air conditioning units (ones manufactured prior to 2010) only take R-22, those units will have to be converted to the new refrigerant by a HVAC company. A process that can get costly, quickly. Think about it this way, how many of you still have a land line phone? Probably not many, with the advancement of cell phones, and the cost-effective service plans offered by cell carriers, make a land line virtually obsolete. So most of us have ditched the land line, upgraded to the phone and service that suits our needs and keep it moving, right? Well this is no different. Eventually you’re going to find yourself ditching that old system, because the benefits of the new systems are just too great. The average person upgrading to a 3Ton 16 SEER Air Conditioner, and a 96% 60k BTU Furnace System with us will usually spend anywhere between $6000-$8000 this of course is dependent on many factors, and a definite price can’t be given without a full survey of the customer needs, but I think you get the picture. Here is an awesome tool from NATE or North American Technical Excellence, that will show you how much upgrading to a more energy efficient system can save you! http://www.hvacradvice.com/site/308/Tips-and-Resources/Energy-Savings-Calculator Investing in a programmable thermostat.Using a programmable thermostat, can be a great benefit as it allows you to set the temperature in your home based on a variety of factors, such as keeping your home at a set temperature when no one is home. Adjusting your registers or vents. Since cold air falls and heat rises, if you happen to live in a 2 or more-story home, opening your registers on the 1st floor, and closing the ones on the second or higher will help to keep the heat where you want it. Inspect your windows, and doors.Check your windows, and doors for any leaky areas, and seal them. Visually Inspect your HVAC Equipment. Check for excess heat and/or water coming from your HVAC equipment Professional HVAC Inspection. Contact us today for an inspection of your HVAC equipment. Ideally you should have your HVAC equipment inspected twice a year, which will help you identify any potential problems you may encounter with your equipment, as well as ensure that your equipment is running efficiently. During the inspection we’ll check your filters, motors, belts, safety switches, electrical switches, contacts, burner assembly, and refrigerant levels. In addition, our technicians will discuss with you the benefits of having a maintenance service agreement, even if we didn’t install your equipment, to make you’re covered going forward. Remember your HVAC equipment isn’t just a purchase, it’s an investment. Just like your vehicle, it requires regular maintenance to ensure that it performs efficiently, and also to identify any small problems, that could potentially become large, costly ones!
