It seems incredible to me that all of the Lilly Broadcasting stations have a problem with "dead air." In this technological age, I would expect station engineers and staff to have been trained in the appropriate skill for going from advertising to programming. This is a subject that needs to be addressed at the highest level of management. The Lilly stations are bound to lose advertisers and viewers if the problem continues.Gertrude S. Myer ...read more

I LOVE Trucking in Erie!

Morning is my favorite time of day. It brings a great opportunity for me to get out and connect with fellow employees here at work to start things off right. For the past 15 years, I’ve begun each day with a quick walk around the building, checking on things and getting a feel for what will be needed from me for the rest of the work day. Whether it’s a blistering hot day or whether there’s two feet of snow on the ground, I’m out there first thing. I especially love fall, however. Today, as I started out, that crisp fall air greeted me at the door along with that bright September sunshine that just made me smile. A flock of Canada geese flew overhead, their honks echoed across the lot long after they were out of sight. In the distance, the morning freight passing over the tracks brought in background music of product riding the rails – product that will eventually need to be transported by truck to its final destination. The click clack of the train, tow motors running the docks to load freight, air brakes sounding, garage doors opening – all of these surrounded me on this fantastic fall day here at work. Tractor trailers were leaving the yard, ready for a day of running the roads. Their exhaust was a bit of perfume to me – ‘diesel delight’ as one of my shop managers once called it years ago. It’s a smell I’ve associated with family and friends my entire life. I grew up in a trucking family. It was only natural that I left school and took a position at a trucking company. Although I’ve never hauled freight myself, trucking is in my genes from back when my Gramps worked as a dispatcher at Lyons Transportation in Erie and hauled what my Grandpa built at GE across town. My father and uncles drove every shape and size of truck to every corner of this great country. Generations later, I’m in the same business, doing the same thing. That morning smell of trucks warming up will always smell like home to me. As I walked back to my office, I was struck at the wonderfulness of it all. There is nowhere else I would rather be. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. I gave a wave to a driver as he prepared to pull out of the dock. I said good morning to a mechanic who was preparing to pull in a tractor for maintenance work. I checked on my dispatchers to see what they needed before the phones got too busy. If I could capture the day and put it in a bottle to enjoy on some dark day in the future, I would do it in a heartbeat. The excitement of not knowing what the day might bring is what drives me every day to come and work with my customers and provide them the best service I can. The satisfaction of providing support to all my co-workers to do the best job they can fuels my passion for logistics. I love seeing things come together in the various projects I work on. I love being a cog in the great machine of industry that keeps everything moving forward. Would that I could share a day like this with everyone so they could enjoy it as I do! Some of us never get to travel America’s great system of highways and interstates from behind the wheel of a fully loaded tractor trailer. Some of us have to be content riding behind a desk, holding a telephone instead of a steering wheel. But those of us who stay behind can get just as excited about trucking as the drivers do. And, after 15 years here, all I can say is: I flat out LOVE trucking! I think Johnny Cash said it best during a montage that aired on his television show back in the 1960’s: “The next time you see a big semi roaring down the highway… Remember! The man at the wheel has a great heritage in America. Like the Pony Express rider, the stagecoach driver and the wagon master of old - No matter what the weather, no matter where the road - He's the man that delivers the goods. And whatever you eat tonight, whatever you wear, wherever you sleep… Remember! It's very likely that it was a trucker that brought you your food, clothes and your bed. ...read more

Early Bird Cafe by our own Erie author, Carrie Aulenbacher

Our secretary, Carrie Aulenbacher, is now a published author! Through a New York City publishing company, Page Publishing, her debut novel, 'The Early Bird Cafe', was accepted last year and is now on sale at various onilne stores!   'The Early Bird Cafe' is a contemporary romance telling the story of Jim and Eve and how their long standing friendship is put to the test when Jim begins work on his second novel. As things progress, they both realize a lot of things about themselves and about the true depth of their feelings for one another, but will it be too late for true love to blossom? Will the friendship be lost forever? This is a dramatic love story that is the perfect weekend read for any lover or romance, and it is not in the style of erotica. She does a great job to paint a detailed picture of how far a woman will go out of love for her friends and a man's thought process when he is thoroughly tangled up in the different loves he feels for two women. Her creative chapters give you an inside look at both main character's thoughts as Eve's narrative leads to Jim's journal entries.  Carrie kept a tight lid on all the work that went on behind the scenes this past year, but is now ready to share her work with everyone at her brand new website, www.carrieaulenbacher.com. There you can find many links to your favorite online retailer along with information about her, Page Publishing and even some free short stories and poems she has written. Be sure to check it out! Also, on her facebook author page is a link to her Goodreads author profile where you can post your review of her book. If you don't have a Goodreads account, it is totally free to sign up - it's a fantastic site to connect with other readers and authors!  The print copy is currently only available at the Mercyhurst North East campus book store and through her directly. Any questions or orders should be addressed by writing to her on her website. Be sure to ask for an autographed copy! We at Lake Erie Logistics wish Carrie the best of luck with her new novel and hope that all of you will go to her Amazon.com ebook listing and show your support for a great local Erie author by posting your reviews to help spread the word. A bit about our GPS technology

Gone are the days of our old Qualcomm system -- Our fleet is now equipped with FleetLocate GPS!This system, from Spireon, is a new addition to our fleet which will allow us to streamline real-time management of our trucks to better serve our customers! From our dispatch areas, we will be able to see what units are in the customer’s area to more quickly pick up those last minute shipments. We will also be able to email the driver specific directions on a new customer’s location from the GPS system right to his phone! With updates every two minutes, even if there is a problem, dispatch will know almost instantly that the unit has stopped, whether for traffic or mechanical trouble. The faster we can give a specific location to maintenance, the faster the unit is back on the road! Plus with each unit remembering times and locations, we can work to provide our employees with more accurate payroll, keep vehicle maintenance scheduling up to date, and allow shorter billing times for our vendors. Check outwww.fleetlocate.comto learn more about this great software program today. ...read more
