Many HP Designjet 500 and 800 Series need the carriage drive belts replaced after around 5 years of use. They start to stretch, fray and the teeth will come off. Usually you can visually see the rubber nubs below the belt or see the belt strands coming apart. Am error code 86 will display when the belt can no longer align the carriage properly.
