Villanueva General Store

By Richard Hickethier

NM Hiway 3 winds thru some of the prettiest scenery in the state. You'll pass several villages & ranches as you follow the path of the conquistadors from the 1500s. Halfway between I-25 & I-40 you'll find the quint village of Villanueva frozen in time at the south end of the valley. You won't find galleries, shops or restaurants here but you will find Villanueva State Park next to the Pecos river and The Villanueva General Store. Proprietor Josie & son Danny offer just about everything you'll need for your camping or day trip at their mini-mercantile. You will be greeted with a smile and a cup of fresh hot coffee and if you're lucky Danny will have some of specialties like smoked beef sausage or home made apple sauce. All of his creations are made fresh with all local ingredients. The store has been open for several decades offering a wide array of quality products at reasonable prices. Try the deli items & check out the book exchange. We camp there often & always pay them a visit. ...read more
