The Feline Vaccine Debate - Part I

The invention of the vaccine is one of the greatest accomplishments in medical history.  However, in recent times, it has become a hot topic of debate in both human and veterinary medicine.  While vaccines have unquestionably saved lives and prevented disease, we find ourselves asking is this necessary? How often should this be given? Can this cause any harm?   Unfortunately, there are no simple or exact answers to these questions. The most important thing is to make sure your pet is examined at least once a year and discuss the benefits and risks of each vaccine with your veterinarian.  While we always reference going to the veterinarian for “shots”, nothing is more vital to your pet’s well-being than a complete and thorough physical exam on an annual or semi-annual basis. There are currently six canine and three feline vaccines given most commonly. In veterinary medicine, we have always tried to standardize a protocol that would fit all of our patients.I believe that a vaccination protocol should be individualized for each specific patient based on their exposure and risks.  Not every pet should receive the same inoculations at the same frequency.  This is currently a huge area of active research, and we should continue to adapt to the new information as it becomes available to us. The current feline vaccines consist of Rabies, Distemper, and Leukemia Virus.  There are other vaccines available, but they are rarely recommended or used. The vaccines that are appropriate for your cat will depend on a number of factors. You should discuss the following with your veterinarian. Does your cat go outdoors at all? Are there other cats in the household? Do they board at any kennel facilities or get groomed? What is your personal exposure to other cats? Does your cat have any other medical conditions? All cats are legally required to get the rabies vaccine. Rabies is a viral infection that affects all warm-blooded animals. It is 100 percent fatal once the animal shows clinical signs, which is why vaccination is so important. There are currently two different vaccinations available for feline Rabies, a 1 year and a 3 year. Often just called “Distemper” or FVRCP, this important vaccine protects against Panleukopenia, Viral Rhinotracheitis, and Calicivirus. These are very serious diseases that cause severe and sometimes fatal illnesses. It is given every 3-4 weeks until 14-16 weeks of age and then boostered one year later. The frequency of future inoculations will be based on your cat’s exposure risks and health status.  This is the most vital of the feline vaccines. The third commonly administered vaccine protects against the Feline Leukemia Virus.  This virus is a contagious disease causing severe immunosupression, leading to other serious diseases and infections. It is primarily given to outdoor cats and must be administered annually. There is some evidence that this vaccine may also cause a vaccine associated sarcoma. For this reason, it is very important to weigh the benefits and risks of this vaccine in indoor only cats. I recommend that all outdoor cats be tested for the disease and receive the vaccine annually.Unfortunately, there are no simple answers when it comes to the topic of vaccines. Hopefully, continued research will help guide us to make the best decisions for our pets. I will continue the discussion on canine vaccines in my next blog. Whatever your feelings are on vaccines, please remember to have your pet examined on a yearly basis. Nothing is more important to their well-being than a thorough physical examination. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or topics.info@tricountyah.com. ...read more

What can workers over 45 do in the New Career Economy?

The Department of Labor states that 381,000 new jobs per month need to be created for 3 years to return to post recession employment levels. This type of job growth has never happened in the history of the country. The reality is that today’s New Career Economy is the really the “New Normal” and not a small trend. While job growth is projected in the “Mind” careers and the “Unskilled” workers job ranks the traditional “Skilled” employee career projections are dismal. What does the typical middle class “Skilled” worker need to do in the New Career Economy and how do they plan for their future? www.entrepreneurssource.com/jgiblin ...read more
