Candlewyck Diner

Until today, we were quite alright with this establishment. We are an ethnically diverse couple - not white that love Sunday brunch given that's the only day off we both have. We often times go to this dinner and thought nothing of the service and experience. Until we met Robin, a hardworking, kind, funny, customer oriented and very charming African American waitress. She treated us very good, the way we've never been treated at this diner. She made our visit very enjoyable to which we compensated with a very generous tip. Today we went back for Sunday brunch. We asked to be seated with the charming waitress to which we received "the stink eye." Once seated we noticed the owner as well as the other staff would frequent and show concern for the other patrons. When Robin did the same for us, this became a problem for the owners. We heard reprimanding, humiliating, and degrading comments being told yo this woman while we were eating. In fact, a cup fell at out table, and we received confirmation of the owner's view of his employees and anyone that's not Caucasian. They snapped at Robin in front of us for something that was not her fault at all and didn't even ask if she was ok. The nicer we were to the poor waitress the nastier and harsher the treatment she received from her bosses. We definetely felt the racial disparity, not only towards the diner's employees, but also to patrons of colors, and frankly it was not appreciated. We were having a very employable brunch and even delighted in Robin's suggestion for a sandwich, to then have the brunch experience ruined by incredibly POOR MANAGEMENT & CUSTOMER SERVICE ETIQUETE from part of the diner's management. We gave Robin a very handsome tip in cash, and we both hugged her and said goodbye because we are definitely not returning to this restaurant. It is so unfortunate to be treated that way, specially when you actually like the place and found a server you actually look forward to seeing at the end of your week. ...read more
