As a young person who has been denied opportunities to purchase health insurance, I was forced due to a serious illness to come to this hospital. At the end of my over the weekend stay, I was confronted by a friendly payment controller who explained that while my ailment would have normally be billed at $25,000 they graciously offered me a price of only $6,000 because I lacked insurance. Thinking I made a good deal, I happily paid. Unfortunately, it's misleading to present the $25,000 figure, because on average an insurance company will only ever reimburse the hospital at a rate of 30-35 cents on the dollar, perhaps getting $8,750 out of the insurance company. Later the hospital "revised" their estimate and sent me a bill for $9,000 instead. Really, the hospital is doing nothing to "help" patients who don't have insurance, however they'll make you feel like they are saintly creatures for offering such a "discount" like they are doing some great act of charity for which the hospital will suffer. Nothing could be further from the truth. This organization will get paid, but I'll never have anything else to do with them again.
