Online Tutoring Now Available!

Until recently I wasn't a fan of the idea of tutoring online.  I thought I would have to be face-to-face in the same room to get the concepts across.  I guess someone passed my name along as a very good educator because I had a request from a student at Ohio State last fall to tutor her over the internet.  It worked out very well.  The student got an A in the course and as for me, it didn't feel too different from actually have the student right next to me. So now I'm pretty excited about the possibilities of tutoring all around the country (and maybe the world for that matter).  I've also implemented a tutoring web ring called Tutor Street this summer.  And while I hope to make it a place where people can come to find affordable tutoring, I've noticed that my prices are half or more of the other tutors!  Along with my promotions, my students can reduce their tutoring costs as much as they want! Come check out my website for more information at www.tutent.com. ...read more

Things I wish I knew when I started taking lessons as a kid

This is going to be a thread all about little life lessons I learned while taking lessons from different private teachers throughout my years in school.  Some of them may seem obvious, but they are all things I think both parents and students should consider while looking for a teacher, or deciding on an instrument. The first one is simple:  Do not think you will learn everything about playing an instrument in a couple months.     - My main instrument is voice, and I am still taking lessons for myself.  Even after 15 some years of lessons, and about 20 in choirs and performing groups, I still find myself learning new techniques and styles. As soon as I get rid of one wrong pronunciation or too much tension in one place, a different challenge pops up and needs attention.  This is the life of a musician. Music is not a science, it is an art.  You can get very good at what you do, but it will never be perfect.  The moment you think your playing is perfect you stop learning, and then the musician next to you will surpass you. This is the reason I continue to attempt to better my voice, and my understanding of the language of music. The second one is:  Practice is a life skill     -The act of practicing is not something that is specific to music.  We practice math, reading, giving speeches, interviews, foreign languages, pretty much everything we do is practiced at some point.  Understanding that the more you do something the better you will get at it is fundamental.  Unfortunately this is true of bad habits as well. This is why a teacher is an important part of learning.  They are able to help a student realize when a bad habit is forming, and foster good habits instead. ...read more
