In late 2004, I was working for a consulting firm (as a salaried employee), and was making good money. However, there were a number of problems. Foremost among these was that I had no control over my destiny with this group - I had to wait for the sales team and the management team to procure work for me so I could earn my keep (and my bonuses). I knew that my financial future depended upon these people, and there was only so much I could do to affect it. I also had no control over my schedule, and wanted to start a new life with the woman I loved. I was gone 5 days a week, working 4 states away, and seeing her only for a part of the weekend. So, I started looking for something else. I looked for jobs, but couldn't find anything that satisfied my requirements (which included the ability to use my creative nature to grow a business). Then I found NAA (National Agents Alliance). When I talked to the folks there, I found what I was looking for: work I could feel proud of, a company of my own (so I could control my destiny), and the potential for growth within a group that encourages big thinking. Within 6 months I had quit my job and was into my business. I would actually have made the change quicker, but had made a commitment to finish the project I was on. Now I have an office near my home, an assistant who works part-time for me (soon to add a second assistant), and a business that is growing each month (including a growing staff of agents working with me). By mid-2007, I'll be able to give Maria the choice of leaving her job, whether it's to start a family (we were married last month) or to focus on her writing. ...read more
