Fix the Basics!
There’s much talk in the news about the “retail apocalypse”. Stores are closing in record numbers, victims of Amazon and Walmart. Store owners complain about it, but are they actually the cause of their own demise? Quite possibly! In my work I’m meeting too many retailers who are in denial about the way they run their stores. I see them searching online for some tech miracle that will give them an edge against the internet giants. Yet when I walk around their stores, I see a lot of problems. Tech is good, but success in retail demands attention to the basics: 1. Greet your guests! It only takes a second but it makes a lasting impact. When you greet your guests they feel appreciated, and if they’re there to steal, you’ve let them know they’ve been noticed. 2. Keep it clean and presentable! Your store needs to be clean, and this includes the baseboards, corners, shelves, windows, and the restrooms. Merchandise needs to be neat, pulled to the front of the shelves, and accurately priced. 3. Be in stock! If I come to an office supply store looking for paper clips, I expect to find them. I might forgive you if an obscure item can’t be found, but the basics better be there. 4. Have what people want. Recently I went shopping for a messenger bag. I couldn’t find one anywhere locally. Why not? Why do I have to search on Amazon for such a basic thing? I did find some computer bags at Staples, but they were priced 3x higher than Amazon. Really? Do they think I’m that desperate or stupid? 5. Helpful staff needs to be available. Whether you sell diamonds or diapers, customers expect to find someone who can help them within a reasonable amount of time. 6. The checkout process should work. Customers expect their credit card or mobile payment to be approved. If it’s not, they may be embarrassed and not return. Are your systems working properly? 7. Thank you! Two simple words but they mean so much. If a guest feels unappreciated, don’t expect a return visit. And that’s it! Or is it? Retail is a simple business, but keeping customers happy and coming back is a never ending job. No rocket science is required, but focusing on technology and theories won’t save you if you’re ignoring the basics of retailing.
