I needed a tow to transport a problem vehicle to Waimea to get serviced. My insurance company apparently uses TOW GUYS AAA. My coverage, via insurance, allowed a certain amount of mileage and whatever left it was going to be out of pocket. Understanding this, I went ahead with the tow. This morning I got a call from TOW GUYS quoting me my out of pocket expense. They told me it was going to be 5 more miles (24 miles) to tow the vehicle to the mechanic than what my insurance quoted me (19 miles). I told them that I believed they were in error, and that my insurance quoted me it would be 19 miles. The guy Dave, very rude, told me I had to 1) pay up front for the 24 miles or 2) follow the tow truck up to verify the mileage. This, as a customer, put me out for the day. However, I didn't trust them, and good thing I didn't! So I followed the tow truck up and the mileage I recorded was 18.8. Which is what I agreed to with my insurance company. HOWEVER, had I just believed them they would have ripped me off another 5 miles at $7.50/mile....$37.50! There's no accountability with them. I called them back to address the issue and tell them I was filing an incident report with my insurance company, Dave's response was not an apology but a threat. I couldn't believe it. He told me then he was going to make sure I never got a tow from them again...really for addressing that if I hadn't followed the tow truck up to verify the accuracy of the mileage I was going to be forced to pay an extra 5 miles of towing, therefor they wouldn't service me. That's not right. Needless to say I will never recommend them to ANYONE needing a tow. They may rip you off and if you address an issue you have with them, be sure you can handle a threatening comment. Although we are a small island, we need to hold our businesses to integrity and honesty at the least. At this point, the nicety of customer service is an added bonus.
